Scraperwiki
Scraperwiki is platform for finding, manipulating and sharing data. It has an active community of developers, journalists, academics and businesses dedicated to uncovering and analysing weird and wonderful data around the web. It’s now on its’ second round funding and has set up shop in the US.
The platform provides a browser-based development environment for scraping data from websites, pdf, Word and Excel files dotted around the Internet and stores them as structured data on the ScraperWiki platform. Other developers can change, amend and maintain the scripts in Wiki style environment. You can either export the data into csv format, Google Doc, or use an API to access directly.
The project is run by serial agitators Julian Todd, Francis Irving of MySociety fame, and ably steered and promoted by Aidan McGuire and Aine McGuire.
I shepherded the initial seed investment through Channel 4′s 4iP fund and went on to act as a mentor through its first two years of operation. It’s a project very dear to my heart.
